TrustGrowth vs Ahrefs vs Semrush: Verified Data vs Estimates

I built TrustGrowth, so I have a bias. But here's a fair comparison: Ahrefs uses estimates. Semrush uses estimates. TrustGrowth uses your real GSC data. Here's when each approach is the right call.

TrustGrowth vs Ahrefs vs Semrush: Verified Data vs Estimates

I want to be upfront: I built TrustGrowth. So read this comparison knowing I have a dog in the fight. I've tried to be fair, and I'll point out where Ahrefs and Semrush genuinely beat us.

But there's one thing I can't be neutral about: traffic estimates are not the same as real data. Understanding the difference will change how you make SEO decisions.

The Core Difference

Ahrefs and Semrush are crawler-based tools. They crawl the web, build backlink indices, and use machine learning to estimate traffic based on keyword rankings they observe. They're very good at this — for sites large enough to have meaningful crawl data.

TrustGrowth is GSC-native. It connects to your Google Search Console account and reads your actual impressions, clicks, and keyword rankings directly from Google's systems. No estimation. No crawl delay. No sample bias.

For sites with less than ~10,000 monthly organic visits (i.e., most indie SaaS products), the difference is significant.

Traffic Accuracy

Ahrefs and Semrush

Both tools estimate traffic based on a methodology that roughly looks like: estimated_traffic = sum(keyword_search_volume × CTR_model × ranking_position_factor).

The problem: their CTR models are trained on aggregate data, not your site. And for small sites, their keyword discovery is incomplete — they only see keywords with enough search volume to appear in their databases.

In practice, for a site with 5,000 monthly organic visits:

This isn't a knock on their tools — it's a mathematical reality of estimation at small scale.

TrustGrowth

TrustGrowth shows your exact GSC data: total clicks, impressions, average CTR, average position, and keyword breakdown. No estimation involved.

Verdict: For traffic accuracy, TrustGrowth wins by default when your site is small. For large sites (100k+ monthly visitors), Ahrefs and Semrush estimates are quite close to reality.

Backlink Analysis

Ahrefs

Ahrefs has the best backlink index in the industry. Period. Their crawler is aggressive, their index is huge, and their historical data goes back years. If you care about backlink research — finding who links to competitors, discovering link opportunities, monitoring link building — Ahrefs is the standard.

Semrush

Semrush has a solid backlink database, and its multi-tool approach (combining backlink analysis with keyword research, site audit, and position tracking) makes it genuinely useful if you want one tool for everything.

TrustGrowth

We don't have a backlink index. We check a handful of trust signals related to your link profile (number of referring domains, spam score indicators) but we're not trying to compete with Ahrefs' crawler infrastructure. That's not what we are.

Verdict: Ahrefs wins. It's not close. If backlink analysis is your primary use case, use Ahrefs.

Keyword Research

Ahrefs and Semrush

Both tools have extensive keyword databases — Semrush claims 25+ billion keywords, Ahrefs claims 20+ billion. They're genuinely useful for discovering new keyword opportunities, analyzing competitor keyword gaps, and understanding search volume trends.

The catch: this keyword data is based on their estimates and historical crawls. It's valuable, but it's not your data.

TrustGrowth

Our keyword data comes from two sources: your GSC performance data (what you already rank for, with real impression and click data) and our keyword research pipeline (DataForSEO-backed, filtered by relevance to your actual content). We show you both: what's working now and what you should target next.

The advantage: our keyword recommendations are tied to your actual content gaps. We're not showing you a generic list of keywords in your category — we're showing you what you're almost ranking for and what your audience is actually searching for based on your existing impressions.

Verdict: Ahrefs and Semrush have broader keyword databases. TrustGrowth has more relevant keyword recommendations for your specific site.

Site Audit and Technical SEO

Semrush

Semrush's site audit tool is comprehensive — it catches broken links, crawl issues, Core Web Vitals problems, structured data errors, and more. It's good, and it runs on a schedule so you catch regressions.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs has a decent site audit but it's not their strongest feature. If technical SEO auditing is your priority, Semrush is better.

TrustGrowth

Our audit pipeline runs 40+ technical checks alongside E-E-A-T, content, and performance signals. We pull live PageSpeed API data for Core Web Vitals, check structured data, security headers, and crawlability. The difference is that every technical issue is scored in context of your overall trust score — not just flagged as a bug.

We also run audits daily (on the Hobby plan) and track your score over time, so you can see if a technical change improved your overall SEO health.

Verdict: Comparable to Semrush for audit breadth. TrustGrowth's integration with verified traffic data gives technical findings more context.

Price

Tool Starting Price What You Get Ahrefs $129/month Full keyword + backlink access Semrush $140/month Full keyword + backlink + audit TrustGrowth Free / $9/month 1–5 sites, daily audits, verified scores

The price difference is real, and it reflects the scope difference. Ahrefs and Semrush are trying to do everything. TrustGrowth is focused on giving indie founders verified, actionable data at a price that makes sense.

FAQ

Is TrustGrowth traffic data more accurate than Ahrefs?

For small and medium sites (under 100k monthly organic visitors), yes. TrustGrowth reads your exact Google Search Console data while Ahrefs estimates traffic from their crawl index. For large sites, Ahrefs estimates are reasonably close to real data.

Can TrustGrowth replace Ahrefs?

No — TrustGrowth doesn't have Ahrefs' backlink index, which is genuinely valuable for link building and competitor research. TrustGrowth complements Ahrefs by adding verified traffic data and E-E-A-T scoring that Ahrefs doesn't provide.

Why are Ahrefs and Semrush traffic estimates inaccurate?

They use estimation algorithms based on observed keyword rankings and modeled CTR rates. For large sites with lots of data, estimates are reasonably close. For small sites with limited crawl data, estimates can be significantly off in either direction.

What is the cheapest tool for accurate SEO data?

Google Search Console is free and provides your exact traffic data. TrustGrowth ($9/month) builds on top of GSC to add scoring, audits, trend tracking, and recommendations — making it the most cost-effective option for verified SEO data.
